ILSN: What inspires you when you choose characters?
Rika Ai:   Their personality! Especially if I can relate to them in some way. I like to joke that they’re usually super driven shonen boys or they’re badass females. If it’s not the personality that I dig, it’ll be the awesome design (or both).1533879_220726791448891_606358337_n
ILSN: Where do you see yourself five years from now?
Rika Ai:   Happy 🙂 Most likely still cosplaying haha.
Maybe I’ll have a waifu and a dog but who knows~
ILSN: Tell us about your website:
Rika Ai:   Unfortunately, I don’t have a ‘main’ website but I use nearly every social media app there is usually under the name of “Ai-rika”.
ILSN: What do you do to inspire yourself?
Rika Ai: I enjoy reading inspirational quotes and save them as a reminder. Especially if the quote can be applied to almost anything. One of my favorite quotes is, “If you risk nothing, then you risk everything.” — Geena Davis”
(Cheesy, I know.)
ILSN: What kind of music do you like?
Rika Ai:   Aggressive dubstep, anime weaboo trash music, rock, pop, almost anything but country music.
ILSN: What is the nerdiest thing you have done?
Rika Ai:   My entire life. LOL
ILSN: Do people ever recognize you when you go out?
Rika Ai:   Sometimes and it happens at the oddest places and usually when I don’t expect it. Most times I’m like “why did I not dress cooler today”.

NERD of the MONTH Meryl Sama

1781616_817851821579406_8387925359850137320_o  ILSN:  Tell us a little bit about yourself?

Meryl Sama:  Hello everyone! I’m Meryl-sama, a cosplayer and amateur model from Italy! I started doing cosplay 5 years ago, but I began sewing my own costumes and getting more serious about his hobby only half and a year ago, in March 2013. At the moment I’m living alone in Milan, Italy. I’m a student and a part time worker.

ILSN:   What is the cosplay scene like in Italy?
Meryl Sama:   Unfortunately, the Italian cosplay scene is getting worse and worse lately. People like to flame about everything regarding cosplay. Everyone is against each other, when we should actually try and get along, helping and welcoming new cosplayers and understanding other opinions and mentalities.

ILSN:   What is the craziest story you could tell us?
Meryl Sama:   Last year, I was wandering around a con, dressed as Lara Croft. As I walked past a guy I heard him say: ”Woah, are they real?”. I  turned around and looked at him: “Really?” “The guns! A-Are the guns real?” “Yeah, and I can use them, you know”. He murmured a “ha-ha, sorry, bye” and went away.  Thinking back at it, it kinda makes me laugh!10516881_876418232389431_1867946517026513202_n

ILSN:   Do you have any projects coming up?
Meryl Sama:   Of course! My next costumes will be from Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill sagas. I’m also preparing more Lara Croft versions and other cosplay from indie video games.

ILSN:   Do people recognize you when you go to cons?
Meryl Sama:   When I’m dressed as Lara or as a Metal Gear character, someone recognizes me as Meryl-sama. If I’m wearing a new costume they hardly recognize me, I guess I’m just too different from my usual self, so I should be happy about it!20707_860915947272993_854626531282614031_n

ILSN:   Tell us about your website?

Meryl Sama:   I have many account on various websites, but the one I more active on is my Facebook page. There, I usually post one photo per day and I display all of my complete photo sets, with my comments, descriptions and opinions on my costumes and works.10906201_874206715943916_2563176227835981135_n

ILSN:   How did you get into doing cosplay costumes?
Meryl Sama:   I first discovered cosplay 7 years ago, at a con in Milan. Since then I dreamed about doing my own costumes, but because of school and other reasons, I haven’t been able to do so. Now that I finally have some time (not too much, but I try to create as much as I can), I’m happy to spend it to sew/make new cosplay!10952395_884211421610112_5235903034595184856_o

ILSN:   What inspires you when you choose characters?
Meryl Sama:   I choose characters to cosplay basing myself on 4 points:
1. Personality: if she’s strong, independent and has charisma (like Lara Croft or Strangelove, for example), I will surely like her and probably choose her as a possible
2. My love for the series: as it’s happening with Metal Gear and Silent Hill, if I love a series very much, I end up doing as many cosplay as I can from the series, to pay it a tribute.
3. Versatility: sometimes, I like to cosplay as characters that don’t reflect my favourite tipe of personality (see point 1), but that I like to act as. An example of this might be my Lisa Garland cosplay: she’s not strong at all, but she’s real, she acts just like any normal person in a dangerous situation would, and I love to emulate her when cosplaying!
4. Friends’ groups: my Rarity from My Little Pony is a clear example of this: I don’t follow the show, but when my friends asked me to help them create their MLP cosplay group, I joined to give them a hand. And I’m glad I did, since we had so much fun together!10947266_882217698476151_5064035072489948519_n

ILSN:   Marvel vs DC vs Anime?
Meryl Sama:   I like them all. I think if something is good, then you should watch/read/hear it. I don’t care about the mean of expression: it can be a comic, a manga, an anime, a book etc.
If the story, the characters, the message are interesting, then I will most likely follow it!10945756_885099741521280_4901340789128693914_n

ILSN:   What was your childhood like growing up?
Meryl Sama:   It wasn’t easy growing up in a small, old-mentality city, where everyone thought videogames, TV and alternative kind of  music were evil. But I continued going on with my passions. I kept on playing videogames (the first ones were Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Final Fantasy and Tomb Raider for me), reading comics and listening to the music I liked. Most of the people kept judjing me bad, but I knew they were just narrow minded people who was afraid of other cultures, and I was right in the end.10421240_830030407028214_5707407713491688596_n

ILSN:   Where do you see yourself five years from now?
Meryl Sama:   I hope to have a job that I like and to keep being who I am. I also hope to continue with cosplay, since it gives me satisfactions and makes me happy. Find true happiness will always be my ultimate goal in life.
ILSN:  Which cosplay gets the most attention?10955640_886408284723759_5236475910417256031_n

It must be my Lara Croft cosplay. Probably because Tomb Raider had (and is having) a great success in Italy: parents and children love Lara, people of all ages recognize the character when I’m dressed as her and often ask to take photos with me.
What do you do to inspire yourself?
I study great cosplayers’ works and learn from them and from web tutorials how to get better at sewing, doing my make up, posing etc.

ILSN:   What do you like to do for fun?
Meryl Sama:   Playing videogames msut my favourite hobby. I like complicated and/or long stories, like those in Final Fantasy, Metal Gear saga or Legend of Zelda, for example. To relax myself completely I like to read books, play Just Dance or watch funny videos on the web, possibly with my friends.10171878_855531424478112_5389187491835674784_n

ILSN:   What kind of music do you like?
Meryl Sama:   The concept is always the same for me! I don’t have a favourite kind: I like all type of music, if a song has beautiful melody, lyrics and gives you strong feelings, I will listen to it and love it, no matter what kind it is. If I have to choose a favourite singer/group I would say Dolores O’Riordan and Coldplay. I also love Akira Yamaoka’s compositions and Akiko Shikata’s voice.

ILSN:   what kind of nerd are you?
Meryl Sama:   I’m the type of nerd that’s always searching for something new: as you could read, I love and follow every existing mean of expression, from videogames to books, to animation, to TV shows. Though I have some favorite works, I never get stuck on one or more of them in particular: I just love to discover new and interesting stories!

ILSN:   Is there anything you are promoting right now?
Meryl Sama:   Lately, I helped promoting Games Week, a very interesting and famous Italian con about retro and modern videogames and technology. We walked the streets of Milan cosplaying videogame characters and promoting the event, we also went to a Game-themed party after that. It was a lot of fun! A video of the event is coming soon

ILSN:   What is the nerdiest thing you have done?
Meryl Sama:   Once, I played Final Fantasy IX for 10 hours, non-stop. I was 17, home alone, and I didn’t realize how fast time passed… Guess this happens when you’re into a great game!ilovegamers4

ILSN:   Do people ever recognize you when you go out?
Meryl Sama:   It happened only once, though I was surprise, since I like to keep my work and hobbies separate. Most of the people who work with me and see me everyday don’t even know what cosplay is and some of them even have a bad attitude towards nerds and gamers. Italy has a long way to go!1393689_881198485244739_2221727395204644859_n

ILSN:   What is the craziest gift a fan has ever given you?

Meryl Sama:   I love when people sends me their own representation of my cosplay. A fan sent me a bunch of re-edited Elfen Lied photo of me as Lucy. He changed the eye color, making a strange but cool horror revisitation of it. At first it kinda scared me, but I liked it a lot, guess it’s because I like horror so much!
ILSN:   What is the hottest costume you have ever worn?
Meryl Sama:   I think it must be my bikini version of Cècile Cosima Caminades. It’s an official swimsuit version you can find in the game Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. It’s a kinda revealing, but I feel at ease with it!

ILSN:   Favorite food?

Meryl Sama:   I’m vegan, so I have to say I just can’t choose between vegan pizza or Japanese avocado maki!10382833_763105887054000_5133008213079953806_n

ILSN:   Favorite Movies?
Meryl Sama:   Blade Runner, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Tron, Leon, Up, Saving private Ryan, Kill Bill, Apocalypse Now, Schindler’s List and others.10941825_884629721568282_6218997085493226050_n

ILSN:   Favorite Video Games?
Meryl Sama:   Final Fantasy IX, Metal Gear Solid 3, Silent Hill 2, Tomb Raider IV, Chrono Cross/Trigger, Dragon Quest IV, Ace Attorney saga, Ghost Trick, Kingdom Hearts saga, Tales of Vesperia, To the Moon, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (though Ocarina of Time is objectively better, I loved TP’s atmosphere) and more!

Mandee Cosplay Nerd of the MONTH

ILSN: Tell us a little bit about yourself?
Mandee:  My name is Mandee, and I was born and raised in Canada! I’ve been watching anime and gaming since I was a small child. I thank my older brother for introducing me into the great nerd world.10309198_588861387900952_7842756509511247709_n

ILSN: What is the craziest story you could tell us?
Mandee:  When I was 15 years old taking the train in Japan, I was in a hurry and rushed onto the train. My arm got caught in the door and I couldn’t get it out. The train started to move and I thought my arm was going to get blown off. I kept pulling and was calling for help, but everyone just stared at me. The door opened slightly somehow and I fell backwards. Good thing I still have my arm haha.

ILSN: Do you have any projects coming up?
Mandee: Yes! I will have 3 new cosplays for the upcoming PAX Prime!10537886_584528461667578_3764989155030172883_n

ILSN: How did you get into doing cosplay costumes?

Mandee:  I’ve always wanted to cosplay because I’m such a big fan of anime, so eventually I ended up doing it, even if I did it alone haha.

ILSN: What inspires you when you choose characters?
Mandee:  I’m not sure, I kind of just fall in love with the character and decide I want to cosplay them.

10543609_585407368246354_7135519620300903245_nILSN: Marvel vs DC vs Anime?
Mandee:  ANIME hands down. Unfortunately, I never got into the comic book scene.

ILSN: What was your childhood like growing up?
Mandee:  Quite normal; I went to school, played games, watched anime, ate food, and slept. I actually didn’t have very many friends, and found it difficult to relate to others in my class.10521370_577894208997670_5892469730617387348_n

ILSN:  Where do you see yourself five years from now?
Mandee:  Haha I don’t know! Anything could happen really. I hope to still be doing cosplay.

ILSN: What is the most interesting experience you have ever had at a CON?
Mandee:  The first time I went to a US con was Anime Expo (in 2013). I didn’t really know anyone there, and I had just gotten into cosplaying. When I entered the convention center I was rushed by so many people asking to take a photo of me/with me, and I was just standing there really surprised and posing badly haha. I even heard some hate comments about me, which made me feel disheartened. It all happened really fast, which was a cool experience.998226_406619826125110_2146299149_n

Mandee:  Business wise, no. But I am always promoting people to cosplay!

ILSN:  What is the nerdiest thing you have done?>
Mandee:  When I was into World of Warcraft, I really wanted the Netherwing drake mount, and the only way to get it is to be exalted reputation with Netherwing. So I did the daily quests everyday, and I memorized all the spawn points of the eggs and searched for them every hour/few hours so I can collect them and hand them in for rep. I did this for 20 days straight and got my Netherdrake. May not be my nerdiest thing, but I was pretty damn happy after I got it.10409496_570277756425982_4258791779108676675_n10461634_569019949885096_4404091594440311271_n

Nerd of the Month Sachie

Hey! Thanks for the feature.
Q:  Tell us a little bit about yourself?
My name is Sachie! I’m a cosplayer, vlogger, and future cat lady from Toronto, Canada. I’m really into anime, manga, and gaming. I love drawing and working on creative projects!555317_322369177818860_1817492732_n

What kind of nerd are you?

The otaku kind? Hahah!ilovegamers4

Tell us about your youtube page?I have a youtube channel called  I basically just vlog about exciting things that are happening in my life, videos about my cosplay progress, recommendations for anime/manga, and occasionally reviews!

206155_368809473174830_499524207_nWhat are your inspirations when you post videos?
Other youtubers really inspire me to make more content – when I see other people making cool videos, I feel the urge to make my own!

392492_322245947831183_1632867733_nAt what point did you feel you could be a professional youtuber?
I’d love to be able to make views as a full time job! I feel like in order to become a full-time content creator, you need to be able to produce high quality content/videos, as well as growing a fan base who is interested in what you do!

1200_500662356656207_421683308_nHow much time do you spend on an average cosplay outfit?
It depends on what parts of the costume I am making, how many props/complexity of the overall outfit. But overall, many, man hours haha.

Marvel vs DC?
I feel ashamed for saying this but I don’t really know! I haven’t really delved into the world of comics very much… ;_; I’m more of an anime/manga person!
What was your childhood like growing up?
Really good! But really deprived of geeky stuff. My parents aren’t really fans of geek culture, so I never had much of that stuff growing up, I had to discover it all on my own. Luckily my best friend in elementary school was also into anime/manga, so we spent a lot of time researching and finding new geeky things to explore!
Where do you see yourself five years from now?
Graduating university, hopefully working at a job I really enjoy! Fingers crossed it has something to do with media/content creation, since that’s what I’m majoring in.
What do you do to inspire yourself?
Listen to music, watch other youtubers, or draw!
What do you like to do for fun?
Hang out with friends, go to concerts/art events, draw/paint, and of course make videos!
What kind of music do you like?
I love lots of different genres! Very much into electronic, indie, kpop/jpop, and pop.
Is there anything you are promoting right now?
I’ve currently got a show on Geek and Sundry where I talk about all things related to cosplay!

315039_237883776267401_540471066_nWhat is the nerdiest thing you have done?

I’m pretty sure cosplaying is one of the nerdiest things I do… I mean, what could be nerdier than dressing up as a fictional comic/anime/gaming character at comiccon? Haha!

Do people ever recognize you when you go out?
I’ve been recognized at university a couple of times, as well as at comic cons. I’ve also been recognized twice while shopping in downtown Toronto! It’s insane because I don’t even consider myself to be that popular. It’s a lovely feeling when somebody approaches you on the street saying they like your cosplays / videos though!
What is the craziest gift a fan has ever given you?
Hm… There’s one person who keeps writing and sending marriage proposals to my PO box haha….. Other than that, one girl painted a picture of me on canvas! It’s lovely!1381472_562824357106673_296688466_n
What is the hottest costume you have ever worn?
I don’t really do too many ‘sexy’ costumes, but I did cosplay as Black Gold Saw at Anime North / Fan Expo a while back! Black leather jackets, bikinis, horns, giant weapons… Y’know, the works.16584_524997837555992_622180612_n

Favorite food?

Korean bbq!! *drools*

Favorite Movies?
Recently watched Monster’s University, definitely one of the cutest videos I’ve seen. Other than that, almost all movies by Studio Ghibli are my favourites! Howl’s Moving Castle, Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro…etc!
Favorite Video Games?
Team Fortress 2, Professor Layton series and Fire Emblem!

PTBACWLlgBio: I started modeling in 2001 and began getting involved with cosplay in 2008. Since then, I have been working to put together a varied cosplay portfolio. I consider myself a well rounded individual who takes pride in my intelligence, creativity and cosplay.
I have now had the opportunity to travel to conventions across the country, judge numerous costume contest, appear in both online and print magazines and meet tons of amazing people both industry and fans! The one thing I really want to help do is bring the cosplay community together as a whole and have run a panel on this exact topic.

Ani-Mia:  I’ve been a cosplayer for over 5 years now, though I started modeling back in 2001. I’m a huge geek who loves movies (especially sci-fi and horror movies), anime, comic books, fantasy novels and video games (mainly RPGs). I’m a big goof ball and love to quote movies all the time.

ILSN:  Tell us about your website?

Ani-Mia:   I’m currently working on a website that will highlight my cosplaying and modeling but currently use my Facebook page to display my pictures, post funny pictures and memes I find throughout the day and communicate with my fans.179291_559044414116557_956706743_n

ILSN:  why are your outfits so awesome and who inspired you for your style?

Ani-Mia:   Ha ha, thanks for the compliment. My outfits weren’t always ‘awesome’ and my first cosplay was actually a hot mess. It’s always a learning experience when I create my costumes because I try to push myself to try new techniques will all of my costumes and when something comes together, I am so happy. I try to always stick to the original costumes as much as possible but I also try to make them something that you could actually see in real life.

ILSN:  Where do you see yourself five years from now?

Ani-Mia:   Five years from now, I hope to be able to take this from a full-time hobby to something that I can do all the time. Though I have a full-time desk job that I go to every day, cosplaying is what truly makes me happy. So hopefully, I will be able to travel to more conventions and really contribute to the cosplay and convention communities.

ILSN:  What do you like to do for fun?

Ani-Mia:   For fun I work on my cosplays, but I like to relax by watching movies and my favorite tv shows. I also play video games whenever I get the chance though I don’t do it as much since I tend to get really absorbed into RPGs and can lose a lot of time to them.

ILSN:  What kind of music do you like?

Ani-Mia:   I like anything but country but I tend to like Trip-Hop like Portishead or classical instruments with bass like Lindsey Stirling.

ILSN:  What kind of nerd are you?

Ani-Mia:   I’m a little bit of everything. I like comics, horror movies, sci-fi shoes, anime, video games and love to collect toys (especially Funko Pops)

Elysium Entertainment

ILSN:  Is there anything you are promoting right now?

Ani-Mia:   Right now I’m an active Crunchyroll Ambassador which I love to promote because that’s where I go to watch all of my anime since they offer simulcasts from Japan.

IAni-Mia:   Pretty much hyperventilated when I met Richard and Wendy Pini who are the creators of the first comic book series I’ve ever read, Elfquest. Someone in line saw me and handed me a bunch of old prints from them and said, “I want you to have these because I think you would appreciate them even more than I would.” I was in shock as they just walked away. And then I cried. haha

Ron Gejon Photography

ILSN:  Do people ever recognize you when you go out?

Ani-Mia:   Sometimes. When I am around cons I get recognized and I was recognized once at my favorite geek bar but for the most part, I feel like I’m like Clark Kent in my regular life…no one knows my secret identity.

ILSN:  What is the craziest gift anybody has ever given you?969965_607976669223331_64591224_n

Ani-Mia:   I’ve never really gotten a crazy gift. I’ve gotten some amazing gifts but nothing really crazy. I’m still amazed when I get gifts and am usually in shock at the absolute kindness of people. It makes me feel good and I always try to pay it forward.

ILSN:  What is the hottest costume you have ever worn?999696_626345490719782_1559669993_n

Ani-Mia:    So far, I’d have to say my Zatanna. I try not to always do sexy costumes because I don’t want to be known for just doing sexy cosplay. That was the first time where I really pushed ‘the girls’ out there and apparently it turned out really well. I even got John Barrowman’s attention. ha ha ha

ILSN:  What is the sexiest thing you have ever done?

Ani-Mia:   I plead the fifth.557281_624885107532487_668902728_n

ILSN:  Favorite Movies?

Ani-Mia:   All time favorite movie is Boondock Saints. Second favorite is The Fifth Element.
